Mandarin, as it refers to the related dialects of Chinese spoken in the North, is the native language of a large number of Chinese. However, there are many differences in regional pronunciations, vocabulary and grammar. Mandarin, as it refers to 'Standard Chinese' refers to a standard pronunciation and grammar used by people all around China to make communication possible where regional dialects are mutually unintelligable. It is based on, but not the same as the Beijing dialect. Cantonese is a major dialect of Chinese spoken in Southeastern China, Hong Kong, Macao and many overseas Chinese communities. It has around 70 million speakers worldwide. Hokkien, also known as Minnan or Fujianese, is spoken in Fujian Province as well as several provinces near Fujian. The variant included on this page is spoken in the Chaozhou region of Guangdong. Hakka is spoken in parts of Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Hunan, Guizhou, and Hainan Province, as well as parts of Taiwan. Gan, also the formal name for Jiangxi Province, is spoken in Jiangxi. |
