The Kung Pao Chicken-An Expatriate in China-Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (about the The Kung Pao Chicken)

What is The Kung Pao Chicken?

The Kung Pao Chicken is my attempt to chronicle my life in China since August, 2004, through photographs, videos, stories, recipes, comics, and whatever else I feel inclined to post.

With the website, I have quick and easy access to everything I experienced here in China, from my trip to the Great Wall in Beijing, to bungee jumping in Guangzhou.

I can revisit the ugly Anti-Japanese demonstrations that Natasha and I stumbled on our way back from the Sacred Heart Catholic church on Shamian Island.

Photos of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, as well as photos of the yurt I stayed in in Inner Mongolia are quickly accessible.

If I ever feel compelled to shave my head again, I can take a quick glance at before and after picture of my first experiment with a bald head.

From the village Chairman Mao grew up in in Hunan, to the mountain that inspired Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, to the Shaolin Temple in Henan, everything is just a couple clicks away.

How often do you update The Kung Pao Chicken?

The website is set up to automatically update itself every day or so. The date in the upper right corner of the main page is the last date the website was updated.

The most recent photos and blog entries on the website are usually a few days to a week behind the current date.

Why is this website called The Kung Pao Chicken?

Kung Pao Chicken is a spicy dish made with peanuts, chicken, and chilis served at most Sichuan and Dongbei (Northeastern) restaurants in China. Unlike a lot of other Chinese dishes, Kung Pao Chicken is served at Chinese restaurants abroad more or less the same as it is inside China.

Originally, the website was intended to be a series of comic strips about a secret agent known as "The Kung Pao Chicken". "Kung Pao" because he was operating in China. "Chicken" because he lacked the courage one would expect from a secret agent.
