These Chinese characters say "Catholic Church". There are two Catholic churches in China. The official, state-sanctioned church not associated with the Vatican has around four million members and is run by the China Patriotic Catholic Association. The underground church that secretly pledges support for the Vatican perhaps has as many as twelve million members. This photo was taken on April 10, 2005. |
